Sudan & Iran – Building Power from Below

Podium Discussion with Sudan Uprising Germany and Mahabad International (Solidarity Committee with the Revolution in Iran)

Deutsche Version

2018 was the year when fate once again brought together Sudan and Iran, which have been marked by recurring waves of protests in recent decades. As everywhere, and especially in the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa), our struggles are bound together.

In Sudan, dictator Omar Al Bashir was overthrown in 2019, and the population responded to the following military coup with renewed mass protests. Since April 2023, the country has been caught in a military conflict between the two armies competing for power – the army and the RSF militia. Iran, since September 2022, has experienced one of the largest waves of revolution since 1979, triggered by the state feminicide of Jina Amini and a long period of state repression against all marginalized groups. Both revolutionary movements are characterized by a leaderless approach and a tendency towards self-organized decentralized committees in the neighborhoods, factories, universities, etc., which have become one of the driving forces.

On June 16, together with Sudan Uprising Germany and Mahabad International (Solidarity Committee with the Revolution in Iran), we want to talk about the similarities and differences of the movements. The focus will be on local grassroots organizing and the problems and potentials of international solidarity, beginning with a short input on the current situation on the ground.

The event will be in English with German whisper translation.
