Bericht zur Infoveranstaltung „Aufstand in Sudan“ am 07.02.22

Was wisst ihr eigentlich über die Revolution in Sudan?

Bei der Infoveranstaltung gestern haben wir mal wieder gemerkt, wie wenig in den westlichen Medien darüber berichtet wird. Aktivisten von Sudan Uprising Germany und eine Aktivistin der Widerstandsbewegung vor Ort haben ihr Wissen und ihre Erfahrungen mit uns geteilt.

Eine erste kurze Zusammenfassung.

Was ist in den letzten Jahren passiert?

    • Oktober 2018: Beginn der landesweiten Proteste gegen Diktator Omar Al-Bashir
    • April 2019: Al-Bashir flieht, die Proteste gehen gegen den militärischen Übergangsrat weiter
    • Juni 2019: Massive Repression und Massaker durch das Militär um Proteste zu brechen, Reaktion: Generalstreik
    • Eine provisorische Regierung aus militärischen und zivilen Vertreter*innen wird gegründet
    • 25. Oktober 2021: Militärputsch macht den Übergang zu einer neuen Regierung zunichte

Widerstandsbewegung seit Oktober 2021

Innerhalb der neuen Bewegung werden immer radikalere Forderungen entwickelt. Die Strukturen der Macht sollen grundlegend verändert werden, um neue Wege der Verteilung von Macht und Ressourcen zu finden.

Trotz tödlicher Repressionen durch das Militär sind die Proteste friedlich, zu ihren Mitteln gehören monatelange Platzbesetzungen und die Blockade zentraler Verkehrswege, um das Regime ökonomisch zu schwächen.

Widerstandskomitees in den Nachbarschaften

Die Widerstandsbewegung ist dezentral organisiert, ihr Herzstück sind lokale Widerstandskomitees die sich landesweit bilden. Sie arbeiten konkrete Forderungen aus für die Frage, wie ein neues Sudan aussehen soll. Dabei ist das Verhältnis zum Militärregime klar:

    • Keine Verhandlungen
    • Keine Teilung der Macht
    • Keine Kompromisse

Obwohl immer wieder das Internet abgeschaltet wird können sie sich gut organisieren, da sie nicht auf zentralisierte Kommunikation angewiesen sind.

Was können wir in Europa tun?

    1. Medienblockade durchbrechen! Informiert euch über die Entwicklung der Proteste, tretet in Kontakt zu Aktivist*innen, schreibt darüber.
    2. Druck auf Regierungen! Verstrickungen der deutschen (und anderer) Regierung mit dem sudanesischen Militär und koloniale Kontinuitäten aufdecken.
    3. Seid solidarisch! Geht auf die Demos in euren Städten und zeigt, dass es euch nicht egal ist was in der Welt passiert.
    4. Gebt materielle Unterstützung. Findet raus was lokale Aktivist*innen brauchen und schaut wie ihr sie unterstützen könnt (vielleicht auch finanziell).

What do you know about the revolution in Sudan?

At the informative event yesterday, we once again noticed the lack of representation in western media. Activists of Sudan Uprising Germany and an activist of the local resistance movement shared their knowledge and experiences with us.

A first short summary.

Thanks for that and to the many who were there!

What happened in the last years?

    • October 2018: start of nationwide protests against dictator Omar Al-Bashir.
    • April 2019: Al-Bashir flees, the protests continue against the military transitional council
    • June 2019: Massive repression and massacres by the military to break the protests. The response: general strike
    • A provisional government of military and civilian representatives is formed
    • October 25, 2021: Military coup sabotages transition to a new civilian government

Resistance movement since October 2021

Within the new movement, increasingly radical demands are developed. The structures of power are to be fundamentally changed in order to find new ways of distributing power and resources.

Despite deadly repression by the military, the protests are peaceful, their means include months-long occupations of squares and blockades of central transportation routes, to weaken the regime economically.

Resistance committees in the neighborhoods

The resistance movement is organized in a decentralized way, with local resistance committees at it’s heart forming all over the country. They work out concrete demands about how a new Sudan should look like. The relationship to the military regime is clear:

    • No negotiations
    • No power sharing
    • No compromise

Although the Internet is shut down again and again, they can organize themselves well, because they do not depend on centralized communication.

What can we do in Europe?

    1. Break the media blockade! Inform yourselves about the development of the protests, get in contact with activists, write about it.
    2. Put pressure on governments! Expose the German (and other) government’s involvement with the Sudanese military and colonial continuity.
    3. Show solidarity! Go to the demonstrations in your cities and show that you care about what is happening in the world.
    4. Give material support. See what activists need and see if you can support them (possibly also financially).
